Kasson-Mantorivlle School Board Minutes-June 2010

June 21, 2010

Board Chair Guy Paradise called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Board members Gail Hester, Mark Packard, Kent Harfmann, Chris McKern, and Judy Thompson were present. Board Member Candy Ellingworth was absent.

Superintendent Peter Grant, Business Manager Bob Hasz, Curriculum Coordinator Marilyn Bongers, AD Clark Jones, JJ Williams - Maintenance & Operations, Community Ed Coordinator Janelle Kirsch, and Principals Al Hodge, Jerry Reker, and Marsha Groth were present.

Mark Packard made a motion, seconded by Kent Harfmann, to approve the agenda. The motion carried unanimously.

The Extra-Curricular Board Committee reported on the Student Activity Survey given referencing MSHSL rules and penalties for violations.  At the upcoming July 19 Board meeting, a recommendation will be made to return to the MSHSL penalty recommendations. Superintendent Grant complimented the elementary staff on their ‘Pursuit of Excellence Award’ the Board presented them at the year end recognition brunch.

Chris McKern made a motion, seconded by Guy Paradise, to approve the bills. The motion carried unanimously.

Mark Packard made a motion, seconded by Chris McKern, to approve the minutes of the May 17, 2010 School Board Meeting, along with the following personnel items. The motion passed. Judy Thompson voted ‘no’.

Employment:

Bernie Buehler, MS Fall Musical Co-Advisor, effective August, 2010

Susan Jystad, MS Fall Musical Co-Advisor, effective August, 2010

Mike Prendergast, JH Boys Soccer Coach, effective August, 2010

Nick Jurrens, Summer work (locker demolition), effective immediately

Jake Tietje, Summer work (locker demolition), effective immediately

Guy Paradise made a motion, seconded by Gail Hester, to approve the following updated/new School Board Policies: 609, 610, 611, 612.1, 613, 614, 615, 615.1KM, 616, 618, 619, 620, 624, 630, 412.1, Renumbered from 630 to 809. Motion passed unanimously.

Guy Paradise made a motion, seconded by Gail Hester, to approve tabling the request for an additional middle school teacher until the July board meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

Chris McKern made a motion, seconded by Mark Packard, to approve the HVL Joint Powers On-Line Learning Agreement and to bring back to the Board in July our objectives. The motion carried unanimously.

Chris McKern made a motion, seconded by Gail Hester, to approve the Support Staff Terms of Employment for a one year contract. The motion carried unanimously.

Guy Paradise made a motion, seconded by Gail Hester, to approve the elimination of the 7-12 Dean of Student Position. The motion carried unanimously.

Chris McKern made a motion, seconded by Kent Harfmann, to adopt the 2010-2011 budget. The motion carried unanimously.

HSR gave an update on the high school re-design plan.  Lockers, doors, and flooring improvements will be made this summer and the following summer.

A booster club report was provided on the clubs’ activities to raise funds and how those funds were spent on 7-12 programs.

Kelly Braun gave an update on the elementary student achievement. Jerry Reker gave an update on the high school student achievement report along with Shelly Bielen reporting on the ACT initiative for the high school.

The next regular meeting is July 19, 2010, 7:00 pm in the K-M HS Choir Room.

Gail Hester made a motion, seconded by Guy Paradise, to adjourn the meeting at 9:20 p.m. Motion passed unanimously. The Board went into a closed session to discuss Mr. Grant’s contract and personnel issues.
