K-M Update from Superintendent Peter Grant
• By Peter Grant
On Friday, April 23, Michelle Krell, candidate for the K-M Elementary Principal, accepted the offer from the K-M District. On Tuesday, April 27, at a special Board meeting, her contract was approved by the School Board. So, it is now official that Michelle Krell will be our new elementary principal.
Michelle has been the principal at Hartley Elementary in Waseca for six years. Prior to Hartley, Michelle was a Master Teacher in the Waseca district under TAP (Teacher Advancement Program). Michelle was an interim principal at Washington Elementary in Owatonna for one year and also taught first and second grade at Lincoln Elementary in Owatonna for six years. She began her teaching career in 1992 at Medford Elementary.
Michelle has a tremendous amount of energy; just look at her web site for Hartley Elementary. When I made reference calls to the Waseca school district, I was told of her compassion for students and learning, her drive for excellence, her great work ethic, and the respect she has from her staff, peers and parents in the community. During her interview, the committee was extremely impressed with her desire to improve education, a love of kids and the vision she has for improving teaching and learning.
Michelle came to visit the K-M Elementary school on Friday, April 23. I know that she found the school to be a great place for children. She commented on the wonderful staff, facilities, and cohesiveness of the school. In the end, I think that is what convinced her that our elementary would be a great place to be a principal.
Whenever there is a change in leadership, a bit of uncertainty exists. I know that the teachers in the elementary have had great leadership from Marsha Groth. That kind of leadership is difficult to replace. I along with the interviewing committee have great confidence in the leadership Michelle will bring to our school. Her visit helped staff see a “picture” of who she is and the skills she will bring to the building. Every leader brings a different style with them. I think Michelle’s record will show that she is a team builder with high expectations and will work with staff and students to continue the excellent education of our elementary.
