Zumbro Valley Golf Course an asset to the community!
• By Randy Carlsen
The Zumbro Valley Golf Course is a member of the Kasson Chamber of Commerce for good reason. ZVRC feels that it is important to be part of the community and support other local businesses. The course also depends on the local residents and business community for support.
The game of "pasture pool" started in 1920 in the K-M area. In 1924 the Kasson Golf Club rented the Chris Dennison farm for $200 a year and a course was established, making this one of the first in southeast Minnesota.
Members did most of the work and contributed material to be used in the construction of the course. Mowers were horse driven and sheep were used to keep the fairways ‘mowed.’ The course had eight lady members who paid $40 for the year ($5 a year each).
In April of 1933 a meeting was held and the Zumbro Valley Recreation Club was formed. At that time grass greens were added for the full nine holes and the clubhouse was modernized.
Almost 90 years ago the community came together and built the Zumbro Valley Golf Course. Over the years hundreds of volunteers have helped with the continued growth and improvements made at the course.
Today ZVRC has a new clubhouse that can accommodate events from Christmas parties to wedding receptions and class reunions. Local support for such events at the clubhouse and play on the course is what has made ZVRC an important part of the community still today.
This year the course even invites sledders to use the hills adjoining the clubhouse during business hours. Club manager Eric Distad said they decided to open the course for sledding to provide recreation for area residents in the community.
Mutual support between ZVRC and the K-M communities continues to strengthen one another!
